Getting started on your own
How to write a rap song
Writing your first rap song is less about clever words and more about a few simple building blocks: a beat, an idea, a hook and verses that sit in time. Here's the order to do it in.

Good bars come from three things: rhymes that land, a flow that rides the beat and lines worth remembering. Here's how to work on each.

You don't need a studio or a record deal to start rapping. You need a beat, your voice and a few habits. These seven make the biggest difference early on.

How much are Rap & MC lessons?
Online lessons are £749 for eight 90-minute one-to-one sessions (12 hours in total). An in-person place is £1,249. Book either with a £100 deposit, and ask about spreading the cost on your call.
What do I need for online lessons?
A phone or laptop with a camera, headphones and a quiet room. A microphone helps but isn't needed to start; your mentor will advise on simple, affordable kit if you want to record.
Why are in-person places limited?
Each MC takes just one in-person student each quarter, so the time and attention is properly one-to-one. Places go to the first people who book. Online lessons have no limit.
Where are the in-person lessons?
With Spooka or Starz across Kent, Essex, London, Sussex and Hertfordshire, or AC MC in Leicestershire. Online lessons work anywhere in the UK.
What happens at the end?
Every Rap & MC course finishes with a live performance, just like our DJ graduations: your own bars, on the mic, in front of a crowd.
What age can I start?
From age 10, with no upper age limit. All mentors are Enhanced DBS checked, in line with our child protection policy.
What styles do you teach?
Our mentors come from drum & bass, jungle and garage, and teach the skills that carry across grime, drill and hip-hop: writing, flow, delivery and performance.
Can I combine it with DJ lessons?
Yes. Lots of students DJ and MC. Mention it on the form and we'll plan both.
