How Carly got into DJing
Carly started out on vinyl. Her first platform was Force FM 106.5, one of the biggest pirate stations in Essex. Pirate radio was a tough place to learn: you were live, there was no second take, and you had to keep the mix going. That is where she built her skills.
More than 20 years later, she is still on the radio and still playing out.
Her sound
Carly is a house DJ. She specialises in tech house and vocal house, and she knows both styles inside out.
She has played festivals and events including Clockwork Orange, Peach and Rize. She has played iconic venues such as Ministry of Sound, Fabric and Koko, and taken her sets abroad to Ibiza, Marbella and Corfu. Along the way she has shared line-ups with names like Mark Knight, Artful Dodger, DJ Luck & MC Neat and Brandon Block.
Carly is also a recent Toolroom Academy graduate, and she is now moving into music production. So she knows what it feels like to be the student, learning something new.
What she brings to lessons
Carly brings real club and radio experience to every lesson. That means you learn the things that matter when you are actually behind the decks:
- How to mix cleanly and keep a set flowing.
- How house music is built, so you know where to bring the next track in.
- How to choose records that suit the moment.
- How to stay calm when you are playing live.
Like all our mentors, Carly is a working DJ with an Enhanced DBS check.
How her lessons work
Carly teaches one-to-one DJ lessons across Essex and East London, at the learner's home. There is no classroom and no group to keep up with. It is just you, your mentor and the decks.
Every course is 8 one-to-one sessions of 90 minutes. Each week builds on the last, and the course ends with a live graduation set in front of family and friends. It gives you a real goal to work towards.
Who she teaches
We teach from age 10, with no upper limit. Carly works with kids and adults.
- Adults starting from scratch usually begin with our Starter course.
- Younger learners can join our Juniors course, built for kids and teens.
You don't need any experience. You just need to love music and want to learn.
